Yankee Candle Kicks Off Halloween 2015

Yankee Candle's Halloween Preview Sale kicks off today in stores and online. My favorite collections – The Steam Punkin & Spellbound – are being offered online only – BOO! (And not the good BOO.) Here's a better look at some of the whimsical new stuff. Oh yeah, there's also some new Boney Bunch figures, and a Happy Halloween candle with "everyones" favorite Halloween scent: licorice, anise and cloves. (Maybe they should contact Dark Candles for some imaginative Halloween scents?)

Paranormal Witness is Back!

It has been a very long wait for Season 4 of SyFy's hit show Paranormal Witness, which last aired new episodes waaaaaaaay back in November 2013. Why was there such a lag in getting this on air when they seem to have no problem throwing up a Sharknado sequel every six months? I worry that there were production problems or a change of showrunner, and as scary show disciples know, when shows come back after a long hiatus, it's never quite the same (ahem, A Haunting, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal State, School Spirits – oh wait, those last two never came back).

Meanwhile, over on LMN (or Lifetime as it us to be/is called), My Haunted House has been having one hell of a fine third season – even with almost no advertising, discernible website, or social media presence to connect with an audience! Did you know there was a season 2? I think I missed the whole thing. Thank you my DVR that does not auto-record anything like it's supposed to.

And if none of that was creepy enough, LMN's new show I Was Possessed is either the most disturbing display of mental illness OR a rare glimpse at a demonic intervention. It really depends on your religious leanings and willingness to suspend your disbelief.

From Dusk Till Dawn, Season 2 Premieres Tonight

From Dusk Till Dawn, Season 2 kicks off tonight on El Rey Network. Wait – what? You didn’t know they made the 1996 George Clooney movie into a tv series? The first season is basically a remake of the movie, is bitchin’, and you can stream it from Netflix.

Martha Stewart Halloween 2015

Halloween is Martha's favorite holiday and this year she has a new partner for her Halloween decor. Granted it's not a full line (or they have uploaded everything) but it looks absolutely exquisite. Order now from Home Decorators (a subsidiary of the Home Depot) and get 20% off!

Here are some of my favorite items, including that haunting cauldron, the birdcage fit for a demon crown, and the sickly wreath made of dried mushrooms, ick!

The Witch

Have you seen The WITCH? This Sundance Film Festival darling earned Robert Eggers a Best Director award for his first feature film (so far it sounds like this year's Babadook). It's subtitled "A New England Folktale" and is set circa 1630. A family settles on idyllic land only to discover that darkness has already claimed the remote land. The gorgeous cinematography, bleak tones, and unsettling imagery set this up to be a haunting film.

The film will be released in 2016.

The Quay Brothers in 35MM

And now for something utterly Bizarre... Christopher Nolan has curated a documentary featuring four short films by the Quay Brothers. Quay you say? These twin brothers (!) are avant garde expressionist animators (!!) whose wordless works featuring decaying dolls and sinister dark themes. One look will give you nightmares, so look away if you must.

The tour of the documentary begins August 19 in New York, then travels to Dallas, Houston, Austin, Cleveland, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, and Toronto. For those unlucky few who live in the rest of the U.S., we'll have to wait until October 20 when the blu-ray The Quay Brothers: Collected Short Films is released. It features the Nolan documentary as well as 15 HD films, and a 32-page booklet. Sounds like the perfect film for Halloween!

Pixar Unveils Dia de los Muertos Film: COCO

Pixar has formally announced their Dia de los Muertos film, titled COCO, set for release Fall 2017. It's being directed by Lee Unkricj who last helmed the brilliant Toy Story 3.

“As artists and filmmakers, we couldn’t help but be drawn to the striking visuals of Dia de los Muertos,” said Unkrich and Anderson in a statement. “But it was the celebration’s core themes of family, remembrance and connection across generations that resonated within and truly inspired us. Dia de los Muertos is as singular as the Mexican culture, while at the same time completely universal in its message. In our story, the celebration of Dia de los Muertos serves as the perfect backdrop for our main character to ask where he comes from, what his place is within his family, and how families stay woven together across time through the simple act of remembrance.”

Personalized Tombstones

Attention Home Haunters: If you have limited time, hate crafting or are just generally unskilled, you can now order a PERSONALIZED gravestone from Fright Props! Say "NO" those cheap gravestones from Walgreens (which I secretly love) and treat yourself. Find them on the Fright Props site, who is offering them through a special partnership Tombstone Factory (to make things cheaper to ship!).

If you aren't familiar with Tombstone Factory, bookmark them now. Not only are they some of the best carvers in the business, they also make other creepy props (haunted dolls, coffin bookcases, and more) and are patriotically billed as "For Haunters by Haunters Built In the USA." One of my favorite parts of their site is their how-to blog, Tombstone Factory: We Dream in Halloween, makes even the novice prop builder (like me) confident to build these cool things!
